What is a desiccant dehumidifier?

A desiccant dehumidifier removes moisture from air by passing it through a drying material, typically silica gel or another absorbent substance, making it effective in cold or very damp conditions where refrigerant units perform poorly.

Desiccant dehumidifiers use moisture-absorbing materials, most commonly silica gel or molecular sieves, to pull water vapor directly from the air. Unlike refrigerant (cooling-based) dehumidifiers, they operate through an adsorption process rather than condensation, making them suited to conditions where standard units struggle.

In water damage restoration, they excel in unheated spaces during cold months when indoor temperatures drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Refrigerant models lose efficiency in cold air since condensation cannot form on cold coils, but desiccant units continue working effectively.
